A building with art deco style looks lovely, surrounded with flourishing plants. The commotion of vehicles on the road is muffled, unheard even at the porch. Several sets of Deutsche time sittings are ready to use. It is located in Jl. Sumatra 19, Bandung, thename is Indischetafel. It is a diner that is present with a unique concept.
The city that is most known for its culinary tourism, has become paradise for the lovers f good food. Started off with the wish to present added value rather than just dining, the owner of Indischetafel established the Indo-Deutsche diner complete with antique item ornaments. Such as revealed by Yan Apriyana, the Marketing Communication staff of Indischetafel; the use of Holland name gives the identity that the diner serves Indo-Deutsche (European) menu.
“Indischetafel is the combination of Indo-Deutsche heritage people and a diner, thus it has the meaning ‘a dining place for the Deutsche heritages’. However it is not made special just for Indo-Deutsche people; anyone with the taste for European cuisines or those who seek a dining place with a different atmosphere are most welcome,” explained the Sundanese man.
It so happens that Bandung owns many historical structures from the Deutsche colonialism era, so it feels just right that the tourists that visit can also have a taste at the Deutsche flavor. According to Yan, the place is also often visited by senior citizens who are very familiar with most of the cuisines and also the surrounding atmosphere.
“Plenty come here for nostalgic reason. They seem to find their own history because several decorations are from Deutsche era,” said Yan.
After passing through the veranda or Indischetafel porch, upon entry the visitors will find a snack vendor that serves various baked snacks from the old times, such as the katetong, nastart, kaastengel, to the favorite, hazelnut stick. The snack store is also decorated with many unique items, even the scale is an old one. What’s also interesting is that in this room there is the register of the 50s, put besides the cashier’s stand.
“In the old days, there is a famous snack, called cookies. Many people favor it. That is why we bring back those snacks. We serve at least 30 kinds of snacks for the visitors,” Yan added.
Without tampering the structure’s layout, Indishetafel is divided into several rooms namely the VIPs. Formal dining tables with a set of antique utensils are also set as a family gathering place. Also, several items aging tens of years old such as the telescope, camera, radio, typewriter, looks in tune with the surrounding room that is also decorated with black and white pictures with historical meanings.
The spot that can be called a “time machine” makes dining more than just eating food on the table, but celebrating culture, for this diner serves Indo-Deutsche menu that is served in accordance to the rules set generations ago. Speaking of menu, as a restaurant, Indischetafel wishes to not disappoint the customers with the Indo-Deutsche specialty tagline.
We have various specials, combinations from Indonesian, Deutsche, and also European cuisines. Several favorites on the menu those are ordered bymost of the customers are the Nasi Hanjuang, Lidah Saus Keju, Bruinebownen Soup, Indischetafel special Mized Rice, and Deutsche specialty cake which is the poffertjes and klaapertart,” he explained.
In order to give more feel of the past, songs heard all over the Indischetafel room are Holland songs or classical keroncong. According to Yan, the concept of Indischetafel is to present something different for the customers, not only from the food, interior and furniture, but also the ambiance.
As one of the diner selections, the restaurant with 150 sitting capacity does not limit their customers, but are more frequently visited by young adults and families; also various foreign tourists who come to have a taste at the Indo-Deutsche cuisines in Bandung.
